What a place was Columbus looking for...?

Beyond ancient Greeks and Romans, it has been said and written about contacts between lost travelers from the Mediterranean Sea with people from what we now call America, a possibility great thinkers had always denied: Aristotle (because of the sun passing so close), Plato (Atlantis had sunk) and St. Augustine (how descendants of Adam could cross the sea swimming?)

A curious book El enigma de Colón (The Enigma of Columbus) Pedro de Frutos, 1980, gathers some of those stories that are confused with legend, myth and taboo, as the alleged affair of the Queen of Sheba who by the tenth century A.D., misled by an ocean current, would have sailed the open sea as far as where some assumed was Japan (then, in European geography, Japan was located beside the Occidental Indians).

De Frutos wrote that whoever had been Columbus may have read in a book of Ptolemy, the Greek-Egyptian astronomer and geographer of the second century, that…

...earth is divided into 24 hours of which ancients knew only fifteen, from Spain to Asia...

And Columbus may could also read in the Imago Mundi of Cardinal Pierre d'Ailly, that…

...the sea is small within the confines of Spain and the beginning of India ...

But perhaps had been Seneca, Roman philosopher and historian (first century A.D.) who most forward-prophet announced the existence of another continent; in his Medea ones read:

...over the lazy years, will come centuries when the ocean break their chains and appears, enormous, the surface of the Earth, when Thetis (then Goddess of the Sea), discover new orbs and not be anymore Thule (now Iceland) the term of the World...

For some writers, Columbus was looking for the same legendary happy-kingdom described by Marco Polo years earlier in his travels to the East, but maybe not, he was looking for the Tir nan Og,  Paradise of Britons, Scots and Irish.  Juilene Osborne- McKnight in her Celtic Legend summarizes its meaning, narrating that for the Celts:

"The Tir Nan Og is the Land of Eternal Youth, the Wonderland,  Source of Salvation, Isle of Blessings placed in a Westland. A place where there is no death, old age, sickness or sadness. Songs, banquets and dances are their diversions, and time passes so quickly that hundreds of years are mistaken for a few days; the Celts did not fear death because their spirits went to the Tir Nan Og(Plaza & Janes: 2000)

Not only would the Tir Nan Og be located in pre-Columbian America. Europeans then also placed westward the wonderful islands of Atlantis; it was widespread that despite its sinking, reported by Plato in his Dialogues (Timaeus or Nature), should subsist any remains, though the philosopher warned about the danger of trying to cross the darkness of the Sargasso's Sea.

There was also on this side of the Strait of Gibraltar (or were all the same great place with different names?) the mythical Saint Brendan's Island, that with Adam and Eve´s Paradise, after their original sin would be drifting through the ocean with the Antillia Island, where it was rumored a Mohammedan had fled persecution to seven Portuguese Bishops.

(Geografía preColombina I)

Archaeological Colombia: geography and biodiversity

Biodiversity and geographical location of Colombia were special scenery in the millenary process of America’s peopling: In southern Colombia, San Agustín archaeological zone, for example, is a crossing of important ways: it is the lowest depression of the oriental Andean mountain chain, forming a natural path to the Amazonian northwest; placed at 1,800 meters high, to only one or two days walking there are high plateaus or tropical regions that offer the resources of diverse levels of altitude and thermal floors. Near San Agustín, several ways open in the mountains to communicate by the heights of the Guaviare river to the Orinoco’s prairies and the Amazonian jungle; other ways lead to the Cauca river’s valley and to the Pacific coast, other destinies are opened by the high hills towards the Ecuadorian mountain chains, and by the Magdalena river’s valley that spreads to the north it is reached the Caribbean sea, plenty of sun, blue horizon and lukewarm water.

After more than twenty years of research Austrian archaeologist Gerardo Reichel-Dolmatoff stated (1978) that it is possible to suppose that during the years 5,000 to 3,000 before present,  the low lands of northwest south America in what are known today as Colombia, Ecuador, and the high Amazon, were the region’s most developed of the continent, a stage preceded by a wide phase of development that the professor named the stage of "Tropical Jungle" (2). Formerly (1973),  in the center of Colombia at El Abra region near the Salto de Tequendama, Colombian archaeologist Gonzalo Correal had found human artifacts, bones of horses and remains of Pleistocene mega fauna as elephants, mastodons and other mammals of great size dated from 12.460 years B.P. (3)

Those archaeological findings and the last ones in Toca da Esperanza and in Pedra Furada northeastern Brazil regions, where burners, cave paintings and human remains have been discovered, dated up to 60,000 years B.P., indicate that early history of America and therefore Colombian history has to be rewritten. Probably the peopling of South America did not begin between 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, coming from Asia through the Bering strait as academia traditionally has considered.

Precolumbian America (intermediate aerea)

Intermediate archaeological area of America (Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador  and north of Brazil) is little known. From Precolumbian America are well known Mexican Aztecs, Centro American Mayas and Peruvian Incas but very few people have seen ancient art from Colombian Tumacos, Tayronas, Muiscas... In the north of Colombia -Sinù region- and its Brazil bordering has been found the ancient pottery of America: 5,000/7,500 years before present (Funari:1999; Raymond, Oyuela, Carmichael: 1994), contemporary or maybe previous to the peopling of Nile’s valleys in Egypt and the former Mesopotamia.

This way ancient people from Precolumbian Americas can’t be seen as savages, which is the common understanding, we do better remember the meaning of ceramics that Lewis Morgan -one of the parents of Anthropology- emphasized sentencing: "All the tribes that never knew the art of pottery will be classified as savages" (The Ancient society / 1877). … Actually, pre-Columbian ceramists connected with their work a "feeling and rational” communication.

But some people suppose crafting with hands as unthinking accomplishment opposite to intellectual production, as if brain and hands work separately; they think of archaeological pottery as a mere handicraft although not aesthetic... but let's resemble Aristotle who argumenting with Anaxagoras said that "It is not because he and she has hands why the human is the most intelligent of live beings, rather for being the most intelligent it is because we have hands".
